“This place looks like paradise.” Justin muttered, sarcasm dripping from his mouth.
Emerie stopped and turned to face Justin. “I know this place may look a bit sketchy on the outside but when you get inside it’s really is paradise.” She explained, quickly turning back around as she led the way inside of a 50’s themed ice cream parlor.
Justin furrowed his eyebrow in confusement; he had expected this place to be a cannibals hideout or something far more dangerous.
"They have the best ice cream you'll ever taste. I just...I just couldn't let this night end without my Triple Chocolate Cookie Caramel Rush!"
"That sounds like death," Justin croaked.
Emerie bit her bottom lip and shrugged. "I'm willing to risk it..."
"Well, it must be amazing then," Justin said.
"Life changing," Emerie promised. "You don't have to get any, but I'm getting the biggest cone they have and you at least have to try it."
"Hey, I'm always up for life-threatening ice cream," Justin replied.
"Great." Emerie stopped in the back of the store at a small cracked counter. "Sara?" she called, leaning over the counter.
"Emerie?" An elderly woman appeared wearing a pink apron, cleaning her hands with a white rag. "Oh, sweetie, how are you tonight? Oh, and you brought a friend! A very /handsome/ friend! Is this your boyfriend?" the old lady cooed.
Emerie shook her head. "Nah. He's just a straggler I found at the beach."
Justin couldn't really argue with that.
"He doesn't look like a /straggler/," Sara commented, her eyes sneaking down to where Emerie's hand was still twisted with Justin's.
Emerie giggled quietly and squeezed Justin's hand tighter, wrapping her other hand around his forearm, bringing their bodies closer together. And to anyone with a brain it would have appeared that he was in fact her boyfriend, but Sara knew Emerie and she didn't raise any further questions.
"The usual, Sara," Emerie ordered. "And Justin wants one too."
"I don't know how you put it all down, Emerie, and stay so thin!" Sara commented as she opened a freezer. "To be young again." she sighed.
"Oh, come on, Sara. You've still got your best years ahead of you," Emerie replied as she leaned against the counter, releasing Justin's hand. She tapped her bare fingernails lightly on the countertop as her shoulder bumped into Justin's.
Her skin felt like fire, even through the fabric of Justin's t-shirt.
"Best years... ha!" Sara chuckled as she scooped the ice cream into a large waffle cone.
"Sara makes all of the ice cream herself," Emerie informed Justin. "That's why it's so good."
"No bragging, Emerie," Sara muttered.
"No one is bragging," Emerie replied innocently.
"You're bragging for me," Sara said as she presented the first cone.
Justin blinked at the massive pile of ice cream and then at Emerie, wondering now what Sara had pondered earlier. Emerie was tall and thin. There was no proof physically that she was addicted to what she considered infamous ice cream.
"Here," Emerie said as she held the cone out to Justin.
"You have that one," he replied.
"No, I want you to. I want to watch your face explode when you taste it," Emerie said, biting down on her lip as she turned to face Justin directly.
He narrowed his eyes at her and accepted the ice cream. Emerie grinned and watched as Justin brought the cold dessert to his lips. He laughed upon tasting the over-indulgent ice cream, the rich chocolaty flavor melting against his tongue. It was just as amazing as she'd said it would be.
"I told you! I told you!" Emerie chanted as she clapped her hands together.
Justin smiled and shook his head. "I have no idea how I'm going to eat all of this," he said as Sara handed Emerie the second cone. She reached into the small bag hanging across her body and Justin pulled out his wallet quickly with his free hand, sifting through it and pulling out a twenty before Emerie could present her money. "I got it," he insisted.
"Oh, both of you get out of here," Sara said, waving him off. "I don't want your money. Have a good night."
"Thanks, Sara!" Emerie said with her laughing tone as she pressed her tongue into the giant heap of ice cream.
"And Justin, you take care of my girl, you hear?" Sara called.
Justin smiled and nodded as the lady got back to work. "I will. Thanks," Justin added, stuffing the twenty dollar bill into the tip jar when Sara wasn't looking before following Emerie back outside.
